“Words are my matter.”
The portfolio presented on this website s a chronicle of of my professional journey. I have written for newspapers, newsletters and blogs. In all of my time writing, I have produced novels, short stories, flash fiction, and poetry.
No matter what position work has granted me, my love of writing has been a part of my work . Employers have continually asked me to step out of my assigned role and if not to edit, then to write. Those positions have led me to write technical documentation, handbooks, marketing materials, and so much more.
My volunteer experiences have also revolved around the written word as I produce and edit copy for the All Souls Con and the Society for Creative Anachronism. Within the volunteer framework, I have taught multiple classes on writing, editing, and research. I have lead workshops on creative thinking and creative writing along with writing for an academic audience.
When discussing writing with anyone, I stress that words have meaning and that meaning matters.
Editing
Like many things in life, the relationship between the writer and the editor is a cooperative one. It is imperative that the writer(s) and editor work hand in hand in order to make sure that meaning is not lost while the text is evaluated and altered for clarity and conciseness. A light touch is often best, but there are times when a deeper dive into the intent of the writer is required.
Writing
One must always, always do their research before beginning any task. This can mean everything from referencing a style guide, research, interviewing an individual, and a multitude of other tasks. Preparation is paramount to producing good copy that fulfills the need. No one hires a writer because everything is entirely perfectly communicated. They hire a writer because there is a problem that needs a solution. It is up to the writer to provide that solution in an accurate, ethical, and timely manner.
Beyond that, the words matter. They have always mattered. They are my matter.
